How to start your workout routine again

Raise your hand if the corona virus stopped your workout and increased the amount of snacks and wine you enjoyed. Great! Glad to know I’m not alone. My workout routine and eating habits were pretty good pre-corona, but now they are pretty much nonexistent. And it’s time for a change. I have recently started my workout routine again and I’m glad I did. Here are a few tips to get you off the couch and get your body moving again.

1. Just start.

We often look for the perfect time to do things. I will start on the first of the month, I will start on Monday, I will start after I finish all my wine. (Yeah right!! 😂 ) Honestly, there is no perfect time to start. Don’t try to look for the perfect time or day because its likely that will never happen. Instead just start right where you are. I actually started on a Wednesday afternoon and that gave me the momentum to keep going.

2. Find an accountability partner

It doesn’t have to be someone that will physically work out with you, just someone to remind you of your commitment. It is so easy to start and then decide, whew, that is too much work and begin to slack off, but that partner will remind you of your why and push you to keep going. My partners are my kids. They will remind me, Mommy, you have to work out today and then as soon as I complete my workout will tell me, “Wow! I see you lost some belly fat!” 😂 It works for me, I will take all the encouragement I can get. Now, if you have a partner that will physically work out with you, that’s even better! Do your workouts together, inspire and encourage each other to keep pushing.

3. Get yourself some new workout clothes

Everyone feels better with a new outfit. It’s the same way with workout wear. New workout clothes will inspire you to go to the gym and do a little moving because of course you have to see how cute you look in those spandex. So get you a few new pairs of workout gear and get moving. I have included a few options below for you. Just click the pictures to purchase.

4. Can’t workout at the gym, do it at home

There are many gyms now that offer daycare while you workout, but if your gym doesn’t have that option, don’t let that stop you. There are tons of free workouts that you can do online (youtube, amazon prime, instagram) that will give you workouts that you can do at home and no gym equipment machines are needed. Look up some workouts that you can do, save them and make that your workout for the day. Don’t let not being able to make it to the gym stop you from actually working out.

5. Work on your eating habits

A lot of the weight we don’t want, comes from the food we shouldn’t be eating. This is the hard part for me. Changing the eating habits are key to changing how your body looks. But this, just like working out, is a process. If you have been eating cookies, cake and ice cream, it will be hard to stop doing that. So don’t punish your body, because your body still wants it, just do it in moderation. If you were eating sweets every day, cut down to every other day, then twice a week and then once a week. Remember it’s a process, but self control is needed during this process and that will only come with time.

6. Set a goal

Set a goal and begin to work towards that. Start small. You do not have to start your workout and say you will workout every single day. It’s okay to start small and begin with two times a week and then work your way up. It is easy to get burnt out when we try too much, too soon. Then set a goal for your eating habits. Start with one healthy meal a day and incorporate more as you move forward. Decrease the amount of bad food as time goes on. If you are a numbers person, set a weight goal that you can work towards, but be realistic. This is a process, so don’t try to loose fifty pounds in one day.

7. Give yourself grace

Be nice to yourself. Encourage yourself for working hard and trying to reach your goals, but if you should fall short, give yourself grace. So maybe your eating habits weren’t good this week, try again next week. You only worked out twice instead of five times, but guess what, two is better than zero. If you are too hard on yourself, you can discourage yourself from continuing. So pat yourself on the back for what you accomplished this week and go harder the next week. Be proud of yourself for starting your workout routine again and enjoy the process. And don’t forget to drink your water. That is important too!!!
